The creators of celebrated Australian works Rumour Has It and Wrecking Ball have announced their highly anticipated new production, inspired by the music of pop royalty The Beatles.
Premiering in May as part of La Boite Theatre Company’s 2017 season, Lady Beatle reunites award-winning collaborators Adam Brunes and Naomi Price as writers, with Price to take centre stage backed by a virtuosic band of Australia’s top musicians.
“This is certainly The Little Red Company’s most ambitious work to date, weaving a fantastical fictional tale about the woman who inspired The Beatles’ biggest chart toppers,” Price said. “It promises to be a heady trip of psychedelic fun and magical entertainment, giving audiences the opportunity to rediscover The Beatles’ immortal catalogue as new.”
UK-born Price said the work also held deep personal significance, with connections to her own family in England.
“My first encounter with the music of The Beatles was through my dad, Paul, who was born in Liverpool,” Price said. “He had a Beatles songbook and would play the songs on his guitar, and so I taught myself my favourite songs. As a child, I loved Penny Lane and Love Me Do.”
While she can’t be certain, Price said she held suspicions that her father’s name may be the result of his own mother’s Beatlemania.
“Dad’s mum, May, had the thickest Scouse accent you could imagine. During the school holidays, she took me on the ferry across the Mersey River to visit The Beatles Museum and the Cavern,” Price said.
“Grandma and her sister Josie used to visit the Cavern and listen to The Beatles play live. She taught me how to do the twist and told me her favourite Beatle was ‘our Paul’. Sadly we lost my darling grandmother last year and so, in a way, this show is my way of saying thank you to her for instilling in me a love of life, laughs and music.”
Price said Lady Beatle would deliver all of The Beatles’ biggest chart toppers, including Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna, Penny Lane and Yesterday.
“But they won’t be as you know them!” Price said. “The Little Red Company’s hallmark is respectful musical reinterpretation and reimagining. We are lucky to work with some of the best musicians in the business, whose appreciation of music and instinctive musicality allows us to breathe new life into much-loved material.”
Rounding off the creative team are musicians Mik Easterman (Drums), Andrew Johnson (Bass), Michael Manikus (Piano) and Jason McGregor (Guitars), with lighting by multi award-winner Jason Glenwright, sound by Jamie Taylor, and original costumes by Leigh Buchanan.
Lady Beatle plays a strictly limited season at the La Boite Roundhouse Theatre 25 May – 3 June 2017.
